Te Whānganui a Tara
As part of the development for the Whiteness / Whitemess Project, I collaborated with two artists, performer and theatre maker Madeline MacNamara, and dancer Claire Lissaman.
We were all working within what’s often called critical whiteness studies, making work that responds to our positionality as Pākeha (colonial descendants) in Aotearoa. Working collaboratively (during our initial thinking stages) enabled us to (visually) get our heads around some of the issues and dynamics we wanted to explore while creating the gathering / conference and exhibitions.
My exhibition ‘thoughts from an unsettled settler’ grew from these explorations, Claire created this dance work called Landing which she performed in Berlin. Madeline has gone on to make ‘The Attitudes, refusing performance’ which is a knee-buckling work I can’t stop thinking about: https://themagdalenaproject.org/es/content/madeline-mcnamara-wins-accolade-outstanding-performance
