My Nana’s Kilt : Performance

2008
Massey University, Lab Space, Wellington

Performance description

The performance is located inside a small white painted concrete room, with thin horizontal windows along one side which viewers watch the performance through.

The performance begins - a 15 minutes duration with a cold tap running on his head / after 15 minutes the water level rises on the floor, flooding begins and it starts and to leak under the door, shoes of the spectators become soaked as the watchers seal is broken. When the cold becomes too much, a lament is sung by the performer until the performance finishes.

It’s hard to make out from these still photos, but the video projected on his chest is of bare hands digging holes in the hard, cold, muddy earth. The image projected on the floor is hands washing muddy earth down the sink.

Stills are below but the event wasn’t filmed.
